BELLEVILLE, ON — September 23, 2026 — The Rotary Club of Belleville extends its deepest thoughts and support to everyone affected by the horrific violence at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue this week, including the Jewish community, the Belleville Police Service, and Constable Jeff Smith and his family.
Rotary Club of Belleville President Hazzem Koudsi stated “what happened in our community was shocking and deeply disturbing. We condemn the violence and the hate that has been associated with this horrific act. Our hearts remain with those who were directly affected, Belleville Police Constable Jeff Smith, his family, and with everyone in Belleville who is struggling to process what has happened. We also believe that moments like this remind us of the importance of coming together for fellowship, which builds stronger friendships and builds goodwill in the community. For that reason, the Rotary Club of Belleville and the Porchfest Committee have decided that we will continue with Porchfest in the Old East Hill Saturday September 26th from 1-4 pm, bringing neighbours together to celebrate music, friendship and community.”
Porchfest Committee Chair, local businessman and musician Sam Brady added that “music has a remarkable ability to bring people together. It creates connection, lifts spirits and reminds us that our community is stronger when we stand together.”
Porchfest is not about ignoring what has happened. It is about responding to it by choosing community, connection and hope.
“We will continue to keep Constable Jeff Smith in our thoughts as he begins his recovery,” said Belleville Police Service Deputy Chief Sheri Meeks. “As our community heals, we encourage residents to continue coming together, supporting one another, and taking part in the events and activities that make Belleville such a strong and connected community. Public safety remains our highest priority, and we remain committed to maintaining the sense of security and resilience that defines our city.”
Additional emergency and safety plans will be in place for Porchfest, and organizers will work closely with appropriate authorities to ensure that participants, musicians, volunteers and residents can enjoy the event in a safe and welcoming environment filled with fellowship.
We invite the community to join us for a day of music, and to demonstrate the spirit that makes Belleville such a special place. Let the music play. Let neighbours gather. Let’s stand together.
